“I may purposefully antagonize and frustrate the artist to bring that emotion out in their performance.”

SYLVIA MASSY

Producer/Engineer/Mixer

While working as a disk jockey for a university radio station, Sylvia became fascinated with recording gear and production techniques. After college, she landed a job working at a recording studio in San Francisco, and during the off hours, she produced demos for local bands (including her own).

After a few years, Sylvia moved to Los Angeles, and continued to record local L.A. bands. One of those bands, Green Jello (later re-named Green Jelly) attracted the attention of Zoo Records, and went on to sell over one million albums. Soon after, Zoo asked Sylvia to produce the progressive rock group Tool for their label. Both the EP “Opiate” and the album “Undertow” that she produced went on to receive multi-platinum success.

Since then, she has produced tracks for Powerman 5000, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skunk Anansie, Love & Rockets, and many others. She has recorded and/or mixed tunes for such diverse artists as R.E.M., Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, System Of A Down, Smashing Pumpkins.

JAY BESTE

TECHNICIAN / PRODUCER / ENGINEER / PROGRAMMER

Also known as “MaGruber”, Jay has been been repairing, restoring, and modifying equipment for over 15 years. It all began with a Fender Bassman amp and Roland Dr-660 and soon ventured deeper into synthesizers such as the Prophet 600, Arp Odyssey, and Univox Maxi-Korg (aka 800dv). Jay’s love for people and for vintage gear has made him a mainstay here at Radiostar Studios.

His developing knowledge and expertise regarding the Neve 8038, TAC Matchless, Trident Series 80, SSL 9000 J-Series, UA 175b, Sta-Level Gates, RCA BA-6A, DBX-161, Fender Twin, Fathead, and our vast array of pedals, are key components to keeping Radiostar operational. Jay’s presence at the studio brings much needed peace of mind for both the studio and bands that record here! Plus he is a brilliant programmer with his own arsenal of vintage analog synths!
